Raise baby cats
Include that you have enough time for your little kitten because just like human babies, baby cats need a lot of attention and care.
For the kitten begins a new phase of life, which will shape the further living together with you. An exciting time, which will put you and the new house dwellers but also the one or other times before real challenges!
First of all, the kitten has to find his way around the foreign world: everything is new and unfamiliar – and the guy is suddenly completely on his own. Be sensitive and try to make the transition to the human world as animal-friendly as possible.
The development of kittens
When they are born, however, kittens are already provided with vital reflexes such as the sucking reflex, but they can not hear and see anything yet; nevertheless, through their sense of smell, they unerringly reach their mum’s teats! A few days later you can already observe the famous ” milk kick “: the rhythmically kicking front paws gently stimulate the flow of milk. (By the way: even adult cats do that if they feel well!)
Otherwise, kittens spend most of their time breast-milk drinking, sleeping and growing – and that’s fast: after all, they almost double their weight in the first weeks of life!
As your baby cat grows and thrives, it goes through 3 key stages of development:
- In the week 1-2 your cat is still fully dependent on his mom.
- In weeks 3 through 7, the kitten begins to sense and explore his surroundings.
- In the 8th to 24th week, the relationship and bond with you is built up and consolidated.
The best sleeping place for kittens
Before the kitten moves in with you, you should make sure that everything is already there, so that it feels completely well. The basic equipment includes a suitable cat toilet for kittens as well as food and water bowls, scratching furniture, toys and of course a quiet sleep and retreat cookies, because even the most active bundle of energy must eventually (off) rest.
Also, make sure that you make everything disappear or discard what could endanger your kitten. These are trivial things like rubber bands or garbage bags – for “old”, experienced cats usually no problem – for small cats life-threatening – so go away with it!
What kittens like to play with
The hottest games are always based on their natural behavior: cats are hunters!
They want to stalk, lurk and prey. Very popular among “old and young cat ” is in addition to scratching posts, which are pepped up with an attractive fishing toy, scratch pads on which one can hunt flitting fur mice: great fun! If you swing yourself the Katzenangel, but that is much more exciting for your girl, because that always takes unexpected turns.
And then, of course, there are the “classics”: small balls or mice – with or without noise or squeaks! Fast, jagged movements are very irritating. With a dive jump then the supposed prey is fixed. A big movie theater! – Even the little ones master that perfectly
Tip: When buying or crafting, think about your nerves – can you stand the constant squeaking?
The scratching post as furniture protection
Since the “cat scholars” is arguing:
Do you need a smaller tree for cat kittens or is it not necessary? This certainly depends on the age of the kitten and whether there are already other cats and scratching in the home. For very small kittens stable, lower scratching possibilities are offered.
If the “entry-level model” should be the same height as a ceiling, you should make sure that the platforms are also safely accessible to the smaller Mizel. Crashes must be avoided!
Educate kittens. What cat children need to learn
“What Katzenkind does not learn …” is best not to encourage baby cats to actions that are smiled at this tender age, but in adulthood are no longer at all funny. Sure – little kitties have to try things out, but from the start, they should be gently but definitely accustomed to certain rules of living together.
If the kitten learns from little on, what you do not like, but what you think is great and acknowledge with zealous praise and violent pats, living together will be much more harmonious from the beginning:
It is also very tedious to get rid of your adult cat “unloved” quirks again – especially since cats hang on routines and then sometimes can be stubborn.
Just because they do not know it differently and do not understand what you want them to do at once – as well! That has never been a problem for you!
This is how you train your cat
1. Cats are not dogs!
“Sure” do you think – “what news! Every kid knows that! “But be aware that you can not train your kitty like a dog – that will not work, because cats have an independent nature and do not participate.
- Cats do not respond to punishment, only reward
- Choose short workouts
- Start the training at a young age
- Always let the cat decide when enough is practiced
2. Realize the talents!
Do not try to train your cat, which contradicts it by nature or character; This becomes a torment – for the cat and for you. Teach her something that suits her preferences – and reinforce that. That makes her and your fun – and that’s worth more than any sophisticated dressage number.
3. An attractive reward
You can put a dog to sleep with praise or a short petting – but you will hardly lure a cat with the usual dry food behind the stove – there you have to drive up the coveted delicacies! – And not in abundance – but in regulated doses – because of even the most delicate treats we in abundance quickly bland.
4. Training with Clicker
A tool that can facilitate the training is a clicker with which you can immediately reward your cat: The click sound is almost the “anchor” – so you mark the success. So your kitten learns fast – and also with a lot of fun! – desired behavior and will be promptly rewarded.
If you are training several cats, each cat should have their own clicker with a distinctive click sound. Clickers can be bought in any well-stocked pet shop.
Separate toilet and feeding area
For one, cats out in the wild would never do “their business” right next to food and sleeping. On the other hand, they are extremely sensitive to odors – unpleasant odors disturb them and they then prefer to avoid what’s smelling. So best to place the cat lavatory and bowls in different rooms, then your Miez is not irritated.
And always nice and clean.
It’s a breeze with Cat’s Best.
How to make kittens housebroken
Kittens from the breeder are often already “clean”. And cats are actually “cleaned” by default, meaning their cat mom has already shown you how to do that when “you have to”. In his new home, however, the kitten has to find his way – here everything is unfamiliar and new. So be patient – even if that does not work out so well in the beginning.
You can help the kittens get “clean” by setting up a few low-edge cat litter boxes that are easily accessible to the kittens, so going to the toilet will not be an obstacle race either. From time to time, wear the little guy to the toilet after playing, eating or sleeping. In the wild, cats do their “business” in the soft, loose ground – you can even “scratch” a little with your finger in the litter – that awakens the primal instinct!
And do not forget: If it worked then, absolutely eagerly stroke and praise!
The toilet bowl as a litter box?
That sounds tempting, right? To teach the cat to use the ” human toilet”? – One would save the annoying cleaning – and the litter, of course!
However, this is anything but animal-friendly, because the cat is so forced to renounce their very own instincts: cats do not bury their feces, because they are giant or find it manier, but not to fly up: for their enemies they would be unmasked – everyone knew where they are; In the legacy, conspecifics and other animals can read as in a book:
how is the feeling? Pairing Ready? Sick? – The feces read for connoisseurs like a cat newspaper – because of the consistency changes just as fast as the feeling itself – so maybe every day!
Apart from that, cats do not like to share their toilet with others, cat or human; They want this little place for themselves, unobserved – just quiet!
